LGBTIQA+ Inclusion

LGBTIQ+ inclusion

BreastScreen Victoria (BSV) has made significant efforts to improve its inclusion practices to meet the needs of the diverse people that make up LGBTIQ+ communities in Victoria. Since 2019, our Coordination Unit and mobile screening vans have proudly worn a Rainbow Tick accreditation for safe and welcoming services. This accreditation aims to promote long-lasting LGBTIQ+ inclusion and was developed by Rainbow Health Australia and in order to maintain it, we need to continuously improve our services.

Voices of the communities

To ensure the LGBTIQ+ community can make their voices heard when it comes to the breast/chest screening experience at BSV, members are now part of our Consumer Advisory Group and multiple Working Groups that aim to offer ongoing advice on improving our services. One of our valued Consumer Advisory Group members is Ricki Spencer. This is her experience with BreastScreen Victoria.

Contribution to positive change

"Being a part of the BreastScreen Victoria Consumer Network as an older trans woman living with disabilities has been an empowering and enriching experience. I have found a supportive and inclusive environment that values individual stories and diverse backgrounds. The opportunity to advocate for trans-inclusive healthcare practices and to connect with a network of compassionate individuals has been truly inspiring. Through this community, I have been able to contribute to positive change and foster a sense of belonging for trans individuals within the breast screening context. This experience has further fuelled my passion for advocacy and solidified my commitment to promoting healthcare equity for all."

“My voice matters and my intersectionality is valued”

An inclusive healthcare environment

"My personal journey has been defined by unique challenges and resilience. Navigating the intersections of gender identity and disability has presented me with obstacles and opportunities for growth. My decision to join the BreastScreen Victoria Consumer Network stems from a desire to contribute to a more inclusive healthcare environment."

"By sharing my experiences and insights, I hope to empower others within the community and pave the way for greater understanding and support. I love working with all women to increase the awareness and supports that are available through BSV. Together we can play a vital role in empowering and inspiring trans women and LGBTIQ+ folks to prioritise their breast and chest health through regular screenings."

Ricki’s advocacy reaches far beyond her work for the BSV Consumer Network. She’s passionate about raising awareness about the importance of breast and chest screenings within the trans and LGBTIQ+ communities and providing accurate information about the screening process, risks, and benefits, dispelling any myths or misconceptions. She also actively encourages healthcare providers to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for trans and LGBTIQ+ individuals with an emphasis on their front reception areas aware of diversity of screening and the importance of respectful and affirming care.

Ricki’s support and insights have been invaluable in BSV’s ongoing diversity and inclusion journey.
