Screening programs

The purpose of a screening program is to detect cancer at an early stage. The early detection of cancer increases the likelihood of successful treatment.

Any new technologies for breast cancer screening must meet the Australian criteria for population screening as outlined in the Population Based Screening Framework. 

There are two other national population based screening programs in Australia:

• National Bowel Cancer Screening Program
• National Cervical Screening Program
